Development and Marketing for Nonprofit Business

“Good consulting is like a good camp fire – getting everyone together for a common purpose, knowing how to build a fire that remains strong and singing in harmony.”

Meet Pearl Kane

Pearl Lerner Kane, the president of PLK Consulting Group LLC (formed in 1994), has three decades of experience in the nonprofit business field with a concentration on Jewish communal organizations.  A graduate with honors of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.A. in Psychology and Theater, Pearl also holds a Master’s in Social Work degree from the Jane Addams College of Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Pearl was a Family Life Educator at Jewish Family and Community Service and held executive positions at the Jewish Community Centers.

When it was a relatively new discipline, Pearl was honored to be asked to join a group of nonprofit marketing pioneers who studied marketing for nonprofit organizations with Dr. Philip Kotler at Northwestern University and the Boston Consulting Group in a non-degreed special program over two years.  This intensive study laid the groundwork for the strategy and inspiration to form PLK Consulting Group.

Pearl understands the challenges and joys faced by volunteers in nonprofit organizations having served on the board of Temple Israel of Westport for eight years, as the chair of the Town of Westport Youth Commission for ten years and as the New England Regional Coordinator of AIDS Watch for three years.

She has been a trainer for the UJA-Federation of New York Wiener Educational Center and for the Nonprofit Resource Center in Connecticut.  She is the professional advisor to the Charter Oak Challenge Foundation and co-chair of the Jewish Consultants’ Group.  Pearl is a member of the Social Enterprise Alliance, the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Board Source.

As Pearl is fond of saying…everything she learned, she learned in the 16 summers she spent working at Jewish camps in Chicago, Lake Delton, WI, and Norwalk, CT.  As a counselor, drama specialist, unit head and camp director, she trained hundreds of staff in program planning group process and development.

Other members of the PLK team include Lauren Brownstein – our expert in every aspect of the foundation world and Susan Witkow, chief of prospect research and project management.
